Four processes that are often confused
On a small screen, move across the table to read every column.
| Process | What it can mean | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Volume or tone adjustment | You change a level or sound balance. | That the device performs a hearing test or is a self-fitting model. |
| Listening presets | You choose between programs or environments. | A fitting based on a measured individual hearing profile. |
| App-based self-fitting | The maker describes a test and fitting process for that exact device. | That every app-connected aid is self-fitting or suits every hearing need. |
| Remote professional programming | A qualified provider may adjust settings remotely, subject to the service terms. | That the device’s regulatory category changes, or that the service is always included. |
Apply the distinction to exact models
The Beyond 2 Pro manufacturer explicitly describes it as not self-fitting, despite its app settings and an option for remote professional programming. This is why an app icon cannot settle the question.
Beacon and Xpure describe app hearing tests and personalized settings. Read those as manufacturer descriptions for the named products and confirm the exact current labeling and supported fitting process. Techmi’s phrase “app-guided personalization” alone does not establish the same classification.
Keep study findings within their scope
A clinical trial can inform a decision, but its result applies to the tested device, participants, fitting method and follow-up conditions. A study comparing a particular self-fitting device with audiologist fitting is not proof that every preset OTC device is equivalent to professional care.
This site has not conducted a clinical study or evaluated fitting accuracy. We do not use a research paper to assign an outcome score to a model that was not tested.
Choose the level of setup and support you can use
Ask what is required to begin, what settings you can change, whether the app needs a compatible phone and who helps if the result is unsatisfactory. Also check whether professional support is included, optional, time-limited or offered only through a particular store.
A professional assessment can help you understand your hearing and discuss the appropriate route. OTC hearing aids are intended for adults 18 and older with perceived mild to moderate hearing loss; concerning symptoms call for appropriate medical evaluation.
